It has now happened three times in the past year. A presentation or event where volunteers from the Burnham on Crouch RNLI Lifeboat have attended a social event and had to depart early to answer the call of the pager. It is a reminder that a lifeboat volunteer is never off duty.

On Tuesday 15th August members of the Sea End Angling club in Burnham met in the Constitutional Club for the final time, to present a cheque to the Burnham Lifeboat. The Club had been started in 1999 by the Late Malcolm Walker and his wife Laura, to provide opportunities for everyone who enjoyed fishing to participate in the sport. Local sea fishing trips were organised as well as trips to France and Ireland with beach fishing and casting competitions for those who were not good sailors. There were also numerous social events.

Sadly, Malcolm Walker died in 2013 and, with a declining membership, the members decided to that it was time for the Club to close. The Club rules stated that any money remaining at the winding up of the club should be donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The members invited representative from Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI management and crew to the Constitutional Club to receive the final cheque to close the account. Jimmy Beekie paid tribute to Malcolm and Laura Walker. Laura presented the cheque for £1451.69 to the RNLI and everyone enjoyed the buffet that had been provided.

The work of the RNLI was then highlighted by the pagers going off, the operational members left to respond to the call for help. Two motor boats had suffered engine problems in the River Crouch near Fambridge. One boat had broken down, the second then tried to help by towing it but then also broke down. Both boats were towed to Fambridge Yacht Haven by the Burnham’s Atlantic 85 Tony and Robert Britt.

The photograph shows Laura Walker presenting a cheque for £1,451.69 to Walter Jenkins, Treasurer Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI with Jimmy Beekie, club members and RNLI representatives present.
