Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI presentation evening interrupted by call from Coastguard

The Atlantic enroute to casualty

The Atlantic enroute to casualty

On Friday 31 May 2019 the volunteer crew of Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI were gathered at SWALLOWTAILS in Burnham marina for their presentation evening when at approximately 7pm they were alerted by H.M. Coastguard that a passing yachtsman had reported the sighting of a 35’ sailing yacht that had run aground.

Being on hand in the marina, the Atlantic class Tony & Robert Britt was launched at 7.11pm and proceeded towards the casualty position. Upon arrival it was determined that the casualty had indeed run aground following a navigational error and was listing heavily.

All individuals on the yacht remained calm and were awaiting the rising tide to re-float them naturally.

The Atlantic remained on scene until the yacht re-floated without assistance.

Once re-floated Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI escorted the yacht for some distance to ensure no damage had been sustained whereupon the yacht continued to her planned destination.

The Atlantic returned to station at approx 8.45pm.
