Cycle Challenge News
Tony Glaze has been involved with the RNLI at Burnham since the station started in 1966. He was a crew member and helmsman for many years and has worked tirelessly for the station in recent years as the Operations Manager, always as a volunteer and often in circumstances of personal discomfort and danger. He is an exceptional man and everyone who knows him holds him in the highest regard. Last year he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a devastating illness for which there is no cure. This is a rapidly progressive disease and sufferers are left unable to walk, talk, eat or swallow although intellect and senses are unaffected; most will die within 5 years of diagnosis.
The crew at the lifeboat station rallied around Tony and his family at this time and decided to channel their emotions into action and undertake a sponsored cycle ride to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The MNDA provides care and support for people living with the disease and promotes research into the disease, its causes and potential treatments.
The challenge was set to cycle between all 15 lifeboat stations in East Anglia (Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex) in 6 days (260+ miles) starting at Hunstanton and finishing at Burnham-on-Crouch (via Southend) from Monday 4th to Saturday 9th October 2004. Five crew members cycled the entire route and others joined in for sections along the way to ensure lifesaving cover was maintained at the station. We worked with the support of the RNLI and as Tony has worked so hard for them over many years we decided that proceeds from the cycle ride would be split 2/3rd MNDA and 1/3rd RNLI. Both organisations are charities that depend entirely on voluntary contributions and we are hoped to raise several thousand pounds.
